Julie Hay
Director of Wheely Active & Community Engagement Lead
What did you do before Wheelyactive?
Having set up BikeAbout Filey with my husband in 2014, I’ve worked there since, along with delivering Bikeability for the local council. Prior to that, I worked in safeguarding – front line and training professionals. This has been with both adults and children for a number of different organisations.
Favourite bike ride?
So many! Locally, it’s the Hunmanby to Flamborough via Route 1 as I just love the variety of views and it’s my perfect distance for a half day ride. Further afield, touring the perimeter of Vancouver Island is a hard one to beat.
Why I’m part of Wheely Active?
As an adult, I didn’t have a great introduction to cycling – riding a bike which was the wrong size, poorly
maintained and with not a clue how to ride in traffic. It was a few years before I braved a bike again but this time, on the right bike for me with guidance on how to ride safely and assertively on the road, I got
the bug. Now my passion is teaching children and adults the joy of cycling, whether teaching them to
ride for the first time or developing their skills and confidence. Having always been community-focused,
when the opportunity arose for BikeAbout Filey to be taken over by a team of like-minded people and
turned into a Community Interest Company, I leapt at the opportunity to be involved.
