Bob Houghton

Bike Maintenance and Tech Lead

What did you do before Wheelyactive?
I started cycling seriously in the late ‘90s and haven’t been without a bike for any significant time since.
For the last two years, I’ve been working as a mechanic for a local bike shop, and I’m qualified as a National Standards Instructor for Bikeability™ as well as Trail Cycle Leader through British Cycling™.

I’m also an Active Travel Champion for North Yorkshire County Council and, as a result, have appeared on posters on a lot of bus stops across the county!

Favourite bike ride?
It’s hard to pick a favourite ride or place, but special mention should go to a Sustrans ride around the Bristol Channel in July 2007 when I first met Charlotte, my wife.

Why I’m part of Wheely Active?
I love teaching people to ride bikes, especially young people, but my passion is acquiring, repairing and maintaining bikes, and I’ll happily spend hours scouring the internet for bargain bikes and parts to help people keep their bikes going or even just to start cycling. There’s nothing I like more than matchmaking a person to a preloved bike and providing them and the bike a whole new lease of life.

of any organisation for me to be involved. Wheely Active
has this at its core along with a strong sense of serving the community both locally and across North
Yorkshire, which is why I’m happy and excited to be a part of it.
